muMs
IS the word!
By Ya W hen OZ
kicks off it's third season this July, spoken word powerhouse muMs will return as
"Poet," a conflicted yet brilliantly talented writer/inmate. Humble, honest and
quick to freestyle, muMs has been ripping underground mics with his fiery prose for more
than 10 years.

This Bronx, New York born and bred poet extraordinaire cut his teeth as an MC performing
in the NYC area.
Eventually, he realized he wanted more.
"Life had to be more than just money, hoes and clothes." he explained.
So,
he set off to expand his perspective. "I read a lot of existentialist and philosophy
books and I started appreciating the power and importance of the words and writers'
message." The result? Deeply introspective lyrics and prose that cascade over
staccato delivery gripping listeners with unflinching messages. As you listen closely and
hear the lessons he's learned, you realize that motivation and inspiration comes from
everywhere. "I'll read the thesaurus, the dictionary, looking up different words,
rhyming different words...saying the same thing in a whole new way. That intrigues and
inspires me." |

OZ called unexpectedly after a visit by an episode
director who caught muMs' show at the Nuyorican Cafe, one of New York's underground
collectives for wordsmiths and performers. After suggesting he audition for a part, muMs
arrived and let rip with his brilliant, '"Kidnap the President's Wife" and blew
show producers away.

Although he didn't get the part, show producers
immediately created another role for him, thus "Poet," a young African American
brother conflicted and confused who now resides permanently in OZ, after managing to
escape through his poetry, was born. muMs praises the Creator for the blessing and he also
thanks OZ's creator Tom Fontana and HBO. "It's such a blessing to be a part of this
fantastic show. My work now reaches a wider audience and that challenges me to keep
getting better as a writer. And yes, all of the poems Poet performs are mine, I write them
all!"

Performances and OZ appearances are cool but when
asked what's most important, he proclaims his writing rules the roost. He's recently put
performances on hold to devote his time to pen and paper. "I've got all this stuff I
need to put to paper before I can do much else." Plays, a book of his poems and a
possible screenplay are all on his plate for the coming year. And look for new HBO promo
spots featuring muMs doing his thing to get you ready for OZ's third season. "I'm not
an actor. I just speak the words and do my thing with my poetry with the show." Speak
