Life Support, 2007, 88 minutes, Not Rated
By Ramona Prioleau

Inspired by AIDS activist, Andrea William, Life Support is a richly textured character study of Ana Wallace magnificently portrayed by Queen Latifah. A survivor, Ana has turned her HIV+ diagnosis into a strength rather than a weakness. She uses her intimate knowledge of the condition to help educate those in her community about AIDs detection and prevention. All the while, Ana faces demons from her past and attempts to reconcile her relationships with her mother and her eldest child.  MORE >>>

Latifah crafts a character that matures emotionally on screen. Ana is introduced as a sinner turned saint who has found a new purpose in life. But the heroine’s tale of a selfless woman fighting the good fight never fully materializes. Instead, Ana appears at times selfless, selfish and self-absorbed. And to paraphrase Ana’s husband Slick (Wendell Pierce), Ana can be a real bitch. But oddly, the foibles of Latifah’s Ana make the character all the more irresistible..

While Ana is the multi-faceted life force that anchors the film, Life Support shines a spotlight on many aspects of the crisis. In addition to Ana’s fantastic character study, director Nelson George layers the film by pulling excellent nuanced performances from the ensemble cast. Chief among them is Evan Ross’ portrayal of Amare, a young man that breaks hearts as a young teen infected with the virus and for whom life has dealt many a blow.

Kudos to George for taking one woman’s tale and creating an important and necessary film that depicts the impact of AIDS and HIV on one family and the larger community. M
