The Essence of Urban
Style
By K.C. Alexis
If you ask anyone what's the most influential facet of urban culture besides
music, many would respond fashion. Urban fashion has many influences, but the top design
houses of Versace, Moschino, Chanel, Fendi and Gucci dont necessarily define it. It
also doesnt spring from a particular ethnic group or class of people.
Urban fashion often originates from someones personal style. It starts with the
average girl who likes to match her boots with her belt and handbag or with the kid who
loves to keep his jeans baggy, his Nikes tight and his ice shining. Regardless of whether
it's the big man on campus, the favorite fly girl on the block or a celebrity, an
individuals fashion flair is picked up by the masses and popularized worldwide.
At its simplest, urban style includes the usual fashion elements: particular colors,
textures, or patterns; the cut of a pant leg; the heel of a shoe; updated or classic
styles. Therefore, the urban flavor of the moment depends as much on individual creativity
as it does on what 7th avenue thinks is cool. Add to the mix, that urban style includes
hair, makeup and accessories as well as clothing and it's no surprise that urban style has
blossomed into a multi-million dollar industry.
With urban style, every fault is a fashion. The most important thing about the essence of
fashion is that you dont let the trend dictate you, you dictate the trend. M
