The Fall/Winter Couture Season
By Andrew Grier
Art and fashion have always been used to define the spirit of a period. The
fall/winter couture season can be defined by looking at the work of Haitian artist,
Jean-Michael Basquait whose work is filled with miscellaneous images in strong brush
strokes of rich, vibrant colors along with stark white and black. His work was ahead of
its time, sometimes banal yet always elegant and luxurious. The fall/winter collections
from the design houses of Prada, Gucci, Chanel, Fendi and Versace are the same. Elegance
and luxury are behind what appears to be banal. The colors are vibrant orange, red,
fuchsia, aqua along with white and always black! The fabrics are classic wool, cashmere,
wool crepe, jersey or technologically advanced fabrics such as wool-nylon, felted stretch
wool, cotton-polyester, silk-satin, laser-cut leather (pony and snake skins), fur and
animal prints. The colors and fabrics combined with age-old craftsmanship such as
hand-stitching, embroidering and appliqué create a homespun, arts and crafts style for
the future.
