Celebrating Black Cinema In Style
By Andrew Grier

T he selection process is over. The votes have been cast and the winner is, The Acapulco Black Film Festival. However, the festivities cannot begin until you have made the appropriate selection of functional attire for your cinematic-holiday.

There is an array of activities from the moment you arrive that require functional and fashionable attire. You begin with registration, where a tee-shirt, shorts and sneakers are most appropriate. Keep in mind that the temperature in Acapulco is around 90 degrees at midday and that initially you will probably walk around to get to know the city.

The festival kicks off with a cocktail reception prior to a film screening. In consideration of your slight jet lag and the exciting evening ahead, wear a comfortable outfit that you know works well for you. Something festive would be great as you will meet a number of people. It’s true what people say about first impressions! Since the theaters where films are screened are very cool, bring along a bright sweater or jacket. Perhaps one that promotes your newest project!

As your week progresses, there will be numerous lunches at Planet Hollywood, panel discussions, parties at the beach and perhaps a private party on a yacht with a celebrity or two. Your wardrobe can provide you with a wonderful means of creative expression and enhance the mood while you celebrate Black filmmakers and artists. Many of the popular synthetic fabrics retain water and may not be functional for your holiday. Thus, select garments made of natural fibers such as cotton, linen or silk shantung. Since those fabrics have a tendency to wrinkle, purchasing a portable steamer is a wise investment. Sunbeam manufactures a reliable model for about.

Make a conscious decision to wear beautiful bright colors as well as white which works beautifully with our skin tones, especially when we’ve been kissed by the sun! African and ethnic inspired attire is also very celebratory especially for the closing night Awards Show and the Dinner Gala as Las Brisas. Both these events have evolved over the past two years from a casual aesthetic to a formal aesthetic lead by a Who’s Who of power brokers in the film and artistic community. Closing night is your opportunity to don your favorite designer clothes, mingle poolside and chat with your favorite celebrity. In fact, dressing for success and to impress may be just what you will need to gain entre to an exclusive celebrity function. Happy Shopping and Bon Voyage! M
