Cassandra Wilson
Traveling Miles
By David P. L. Dodson
When I met Ms. Wilson earlier this year, her presence truly froze me. She stood
as a goddess - beyond human with the ability to melt souls with her voice. If I knew then
what I know now, the pleasant chitchat we shared may have turned into an intelligent
conversation. So what do I know now? |

Even goddesses have idols, and on her new album Ms. Wilson honors a god in
his own right, Miles Davis. The truly amazing thing about this album is that although it
is a tribute to Miles, it is so clearly Ms. Wilson's album. Her re-workings of Miles'
standards seem like new songs influenced by Miles rather than Miles' covers. And where she
adds lyrics, she gives words to the voice of Miles' trumpet. You can almost see Miles
laugh as she says, "but when it comes to making music/ I run the voodoo down,"
on "Run the Voodoo Down." "Sky and Sea (Blue in Green)" is absolutely
amazing in its arrangement and lyrics. It's almost as though Ms. Wilson is speaking with
Miles from song to song - consulting his legacy and giving it back. This is truly an
amazing album that I could analyze for days, but the album must be heard to truly
appreciate it. By the time you get to "Voodoo Reprise" featuring the amazing
Angelique Kidjo on guest vocals, you'll be thanking me.
