Prince
The Vault: Old Friends 4 Sale
By David Dodson
It's important to remember that The Vault is a Warner Brothers release, which at
this point means its a package Prince probably wouldn't have wanted released and one
The Artist probably doesnt want you to buy. But to a fan of The Artist's music, that
means absolutely nothing - you just want to hear the music. Or, maybe when you hear
theres a new collection of unreleased material, you dont really care anymore.
That's truly a shame, but who can blame you.

This collection represents material from 1985 to 1994 and
during that period there was probably a Prince song or album that caused you to remark,
"the man is a genius." And the reason for that is Prince was and The Artist is a
dedicated musician and what dedicated musicians do is make music. There arent any
real radio hits on this album and as a whole it sounds like a well-recorded jam session
with Prince playing extended solos and singing those "on the fly" lyrics that
made you like him in the first place. You can tell he was having fun making this music.
That the music spans such a broad time period, yet still flows together perfectly, is a
testament to the timelessness of truly dedicated musicians.
Now the bad part. The liner notes list all of the musicians together as if they all played
on every song during this nine-year period. Dates for individual songs are missing from
the credits so you also dont know when what was made. In addition, a footnote alerts
you that the songs were "originally intended for private use," but Warner
Brothers doesnt care it will distribute it if it will sell. You can laugh you can
cry, both are appropriate; but even if you dont buy The Vault, go buy an old Prince album. M
