Brooks Terron Brooks
By Carla Robinson
Terron
Brooks has a lot to offer the world musically. Although the
multi-talented performer has done Broadway, film, and TV, his deepest
passion lies in singing and songwriting, what he calls his
"ministry." Offering forth his unique brand of
"inspirational pop," Brooks' eponymous CD features a set of
pretty, poised songs in praise of God and faith.

A few years back, Brooks
was hot on the R&B trail. He was recording and performing songs
written by other people, and, at first, everything seemed fine.
"It looked like things were going great but there was kind of a
void," he remembers during an interview. "One day I was in
the studio and my producer asked if something was wrong. He sensed
that I wasn't connecting with the music. That was my first signal that
I didn't really want to sing R&B." After that, he did some
soul searching to find his artistic core. He found it in his Christian
roots. This discovery led him to write his own songs, seek new
management, and "not care about making hits."

Just as the saying goes,
when you stop seeking something, you find it. Brooks may have stopped
courting chart success, but his songs will likely take him there
anyway. His joyful noise could well make the kind of splash that Take
6's did in the late '80s, gaining recognition beyond the gospel or
inspirational market. Brooks wouldn't mind, he wants his work to touch
people whether they subscribe to his beliefs or not. "Some of my
music is religious," he says, "but all of it is about love
and motivation and being encouraged." He wishes more popular
artists would dedicate a little of their studio time to recording
"inspirational and positive songs, because that would rub off on
young people."

One caveat, don't look for Brooks' CD in
record stores yet. The disc is actually a five-song promotional set,
designed to give us a taste of what this honey-voiced singer can do.
Brooks looks forward to recording a full album later this year. For
now, his current CD is available through Remnant Artist Management
(310-717-5888) and at his live appearances. Like anything worth
having, it's worth putting forth the effort to get. Once you do, be
sure to listen to the melodic and moving "How," and
"One Day," on which his co-star from the film All
About You, Renee Goldsberry, provides lovely accompanying vocals. M
