Santana
Supernatural
By David Dodson
Carlos Santana is a musical legend. Clive Davis is a music industry legend.
Theyve come together on Supernatural to create an album that legends are
made of. The quest: bring the genius of Santana to the audience of the new millenium. The
leader on this quest: Clive Davis. I honestly think Clive was sitting back listening to
Abraxas or something saying, "these guys are geniuses let's make them million sellers
again." Then, in true late-nineties fashion, Clive rounds up a group of killer guest
spots (nine in total), records and packages Supernatural. |

When Supernatural first came out, the buzz was around.
"Clive did the new Santana album!" "Yeah, I heard Dave Matthews and Rob
Thomas are on it." "Isnt Lauryn Hill on it too?" "Oh I love
her." "Everlast and Eagle-Eye Cherry are on it too." After the single Smooth
was released, the buzz hit everyone. "Did you hear that song with Rob Thomas?"
"Oh my god, I love that song! Do you know what album its on?" "I
think its on the new Santana album."
Clive is an industry genius I tell ya and thats why you should buy this album. If
you want to hear Santana, buy some old stuff. But to be apart of the genius of Clive, pick
up Supernatural.
Dont get me wrong, most of the songs on Supernatural are likeable, Carlos' playing
is great and Corazon Espinado is classic. Guests Mana, Dave Matthews and
Everlast, who realize and respect that they arent the genius Santana is, also result
in some amazing collaborations. But none of that is the point. The point is Clive Davis is
an industry genius. Got it? Good, go get it.
