"We hope that (the album) Love Session will teach lessons about how
to have better relationships. On the album, we talk about every element, and every
situation that goes on in relationships," said Glenn, better known as "Big
G." "Being in love, falling out of love, having disagreements, doing wrong,
putting your pride aside, making up, etc."
The title song does more than offer a platform for the group's polished harmonies; it sets
the tone for the rest of the album. "Our producer, [Darrell "Delite"
Allamby], brought that song to the table," said Big G. "They structured the song
so that vocally we were able to take our harmonies to a different place. We put a country
spin on it, and it is distinctly ours," he added.
Since 1993, Silk's sound has been imitated, but never duplicated, which may account for
their longevity. Jimmy Gates, Jr., simply known as Jimmy, believes that the key to the
group's durability has been consistency. "We hope to lay the foundation for the next
ten years. Silk wants to reach the fans on a more widespread basis. We are trying to pace
ourselves," he said. "We also hope that this album broadens our appeal on the
whole, and as individuals," adds Gary Jenkins, also known as "Lil G."
Singularly, the members of Silk have also made time to pursue their other interests as
well. Lil' G has been developing his skills as an actor, and had an opportunity to hone
his skills in a touring version of the play, "Fake Friends," written by Michael
Matthews a few years ago. Other members, Timothy Cameron (Timzo), Johnathen Rasboro (John
John), and Jimmy have formed a production company Twenty East Music, which houses artists
DSA, Klis, and Southern Misses.
Yet as a whole, the group continues to evolve. Now certified music veterans, Silk recently
initiated plans to produce and nurture acts under the Silk Music Group banner, and
possibly build a Silk studio or two sometime in the future. "One thing we've learned
is that we are much stronger as a unit," says Big G. "We've learned that the
responsibility is on us, no one else. Hopefully we're on the path to developing the kind
of rapport where our fans will stick with us for the next twenty years. You just can't
manufacture that." John John seconds the notion: "Silk is self
explanatory."
