Brenda Russell
Paris Rain
By Steven Fullwood
Brenda Russell's name is synonymous with good music. She has a distinct voice,
poignant love songs and mad skills as a songwriter. Over the past three decades, she has
quietly created some very memorable music. From the soul-stirring "So Good So
Right," to "Piano in the Dark," to "Get Here," (the latter tune
recorded by Oleta Adams), Russell's incorporates a wide range of musical influences -
rock, pop, R&B, jazz, classical and Latin - that seemingly blend into a unique and
signature sound all her own.

Born in Brooklyn and raised in Canada, Russell once again
graces the masses with her seventh studio album to date, the sumptuous Paris Rain. She
writes, plays and co-produces most of Paris Rain, an album with gorgeous melodies and
inspired lyrics. Though she's assembled a most capable group of musicians and singers on
this album including Greg Phillinganes, Dave Koz, Siedah Garrett, Sheila E and Paulinho Da
Casta, this album is pure Russell. Her vocal style and graceful delivery recalls classic
songs like "If Only for One Night," by Luther Vandross.
Paris Rain is consistently mellow from the hopeful "Ideal World" to the sweet
"She's in Love." Though primarily known as a writer of ballads, Russell kicks it
on the Latin infused "Walkin' in New York." Most of the songs on Paris Rain move
along quietly, creating a magnificent soundtrack to late night lazy summers. Among the
best are "You Can't Hide Your Heart From Me," "Move the Moon," and the
closing track, the jazzy "Baby Eyes."
