Yolanda Adams
Mountain High
Valley Low
By Steven G. Fullwood
Kirk Franklin needs some love. Since bursting on to the scene in 1996, the
thirty-year-old ministers infectious blend of contemporary hip-hop music with
traditional gospel choir arrangements burst open the gates for a flood of artists with
similar ambitions. Leading the pack is Yolanda Adams, one of the finest vocalists to
emerge in modern music.

Its always a gamble when gospel artists decide to record more
hip-hop inspired songs in an effort to reach younger audiences, but Adams easily clears
the bar with her seventh album Mountain High
Valley Low. Adams just snagged a Grammy
this year for Best Contemporary Soul Gospel Album, and after a listen, youll
understand why. |

Mountain High
Valley Low makes its intentions very
clear from the beginning. From the opening scratches of the first cut Time to
Change, to the rousing closing track Already Alright, Adams takes no
shorts. This is a family album, one that you, your parents and grandparents can enjoy at
the dinner table.
Although shes more comfortable on traditional gospel arrangements such as
Fragile Heart, That Name and the delightful In the Midst of
It All, she ably handles the more commercial tracks Yeah, and
Already Alright with finesse. Special attention should be given to In
the Midst of All. Adams is at her finest, literally going mountain high and swooping
valley low with formidable vocal prowess. Backed with the best production any vocalist
could want, Adams lets loose and takes you to church. This sister will make you a
believer. M
