Malik Pendleton
Look Around
By Steven G. Fullwood
Known primarily as a producer, arranger and writer, Malik Pendleton rolls up his
sleeves and re-enters the industry as a solo artist. Look Around, Pendleton's debut
release has all the ingredients of cool. Boasting warm melodies, solid vocals and
thoughtful lyricism, the album puts another brink in the current re-establishment of
respectful rhythm and blues. No scrubs and pigeons allowed.

Pendleton rummages through his personal history and comes
up with a potent mix of rhythm and blues sure to set fire to any sound system. Spare,
thoughtful arrangements allow Pendleton to weave in and out of "Bad Ass Little
Kid," an ode to his childhood pursuits in light of today's abysmal reality.
In Bad Ass Kid, Pendleton respectfully tips his hat to yesterday's soul
singers such as Donny Hathaway, Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye and appears to pass the
torch to current crooners like Mary J., Lauryn, Faith, Erykah, Maxwell and Joe. This
effort feels a bit forced, like he's seeking to join the ranks, but it's cool because he's
got potential. Standout joints include the title cut, "Lucky Guy," and
"Little Brother, Little Sister," which features the queen of hip-hop Mary J.
Blige on co-lead vocals.
Pendleton's main talents lie in producing. Some of his recent work with Mary J. Blige
("Share My World"), SWV ("Release Some Tension") and the diva of all
divas Diana Ross ("A Brand New Day") attest to his skills.
If you enjoy your rhythm and blues, cut with a hip-edge, smoothed out on the lyric tip,
check out Look Around. You wont be disappointed. M
