By David Dodson
From 1967-1970, the music world was blessed with a gift the likes of which it had
never experienced before and it has never experienced since. Armed with fingers that knew
a guitar better than they knew their own fingernails and a sense of music many felt out of
this world, a man left a music legacy behind that is unparalleled. His name was Jimi
Hendrix. Perhaps you have heard of him or heard his music in a commercial. But have you
experienced this legend? Well, with the new Jimi Hendrix Experience Box Set, put together

The true testament of Hendrix's greatness is the sheer volume of music he
recorded in the three years he ruled the scene. Now, thirty years after his death,
its amazing to think that there are still recordings by him that have not been
released. To say he was ahead of his time is an understatement. It's almost as if
technology and music were in a race to catch up with him. Beyond just his guitar playing,
his song writing combined ideas in ways that no one had heard before. You get the
impression that Hendrix just thought in music and fought to put as many ideas as possible
on to tape. The growth that you hear in Hendrix's sound does not necessarily have to be
Hendrix's evolution but could be the industry growing to accommodate his amazing ideas.
This is what the new box set captures about Jimi, the true genius of the man.

Featuring both live and studio recordings that span the
course of Hendrix's career, we get a wonderful and intimate peek into Hendrix. There are
the beginning sketches of some of his classic cuts, early vocal tracks and studio outtakes
featuring Hendrix talking his way through sessions. Listening to the 56-track box set from
beginning to end, which features a number of rare cuts and previously unreleased material,
there really is a progression that gives an amazing account of Hendrix's music career.
Throughout the set however, you get the impression that Hendrix was always in his prime,
from the early live appearances that got him his recording contract to the multi-tracked
masterpieces in his final year. Interestingly, that no one has been able to match
Hendrixs magnificence is a testament to his legendary status. M
