Dianne
Reeves
In The Moment/Live in Concert
By Steven Fullwood
Long
regarded for her command of the stage, Dianne Reeves lets go on her
only US live album, In the Moment/Live in Concert. Recorded over two
days on Sound Stage 1 in Los Angeles, California and produced by
longtime collaborator and cousin, George Duke, In the Moment captures
an indefinable essence virtually absent from the majority of Reeves'
expansive catalog. More than simply reworking songs or scatting, the
singer's storytelling sensibility is heightened as she performs before
a crowd.

This disc crackles with intimacy. Not
one song fails to enchant. In the Moment makes one want to run out and
purchase Reeves's catalog. The 11 tracks were carefully chosen and
reworked onstage to miraculous effect. Her signature tune "Better
Days" appears here as "The Best Times (Grandma's
Song)," where the singer conjures up memories of her Grandma's love
in scents, tastes, images and sounds. Reeves' dulcet words drape the
song delicately as it slowly surges toward its climatic end - a
magnificent achievement.

Accompanied by an incredible band and
exceptional background singers, Reeves travels songs like an
experienced voyager who places one arm around listeners and with the
other points out the beauty of each experience. Classics like
"Love For Sale" and "Afro Blue" dance like
butterflies before the eyes; "Testify" floats, caresses the
ear and incites courage; "Mista" rocks the heart and
"Come In" fills the lungs and breathes romantic flair. Make
sure you show up for this experience. M
