Rachelle
Ferrell
Individuality (Can I Be Me?)
By Steven Fullwood
To say that Rachelle Ferrells latest and third album, Individuality (Can I
Be Me?), is a stunning achievement is an understatement. She has created a modern classic
that combines tremendously inventive vocalese, flexible jazz-infused R&B and
thoughtful lyrics in a profoundly moving way. Individuality (Can I Be Me?) is an exquisite
recipe that is almost too much to consume in one setting, so get ready to sup, bit by bit.

Like a full-course gourmet meal, Ferrell's voice is an
inexhaustible store of flavors, aromas and textures - ambitious and wholly satisfying. She
rhetorically asks, "Can I be me?" on the title track and lays out a geography of
sound that mesmerizes at every turn. She takes a fickle lover to task on cuts Will
You Remember Me? and Why You Wanna Mess It All Up? and softens up on the
soothing I Forgive You and the healing I Gotta Go. Jonathan Butler
joins her on the Earth-conscious Gaia and she opens her heart on Run to
Me.
Ferrell writes, arranges and executive produces the album like a pro. She also employs
virtuoso George Duke who lends his considerable skills as songwriter, musician and
producer. All told, you know all is right in the world when there are artists like Ferrell
around. She uses her six and half octave range to coo, growl and purr. With such orgasmic
fervor, listening to her is like slowly immersing in a hot bath after a day of standing in
the freezing rain. You are warmed and reborn. M
