Jack Knight
Gypsy Blues
By Steven G. Fullwood
Okay, Jack Knight, you got my pressure up. After listening to cuts from your
debut album Gypsy Blues, I know you can do better than this.
On songs like "Do What You Wanna Do," and "Best Friend" you tell
stories about relationships gone wrong, but the lyrics are juvenile and fail to spark the
interest the music works so hard to establish. On Do What You Wanna Do, we
hear about a good man whos trifling girlfriend wont stop messin about.
On Best Friend, we get a heavy dose of a man who wants to do his
girlfriends freaky best friend. The pigeons and scrubs run rampant through this
disc.

Other songs lean towards cosmic. Take
Rescue Me. Lyrics: "When I look up in the stars/I often wonder where you
are/and if the road we both walk goes all the way/and if you ever need a smile/just
reminisce of me awhile/and maybe I'll resurrect and live again." Huh? I dont
think I get this. I tried.
While your rap skills are admirable, Lauryn Hill you ain't. Your singing clearly shows the
influence of Marvin Gaye, but you sound like Melvin Riley, former lead singer of Ready for
the World.
Gypsy Blues tries to take us there, but falls short of its potential. Knight, next time
don't be afraid to go the territory. Move out of the ghetto of rhythm and blues; take up
residence in a healthier, more loving neighborhood. Itll do you and your music good.
