Dwayne
Wiggins
Eyes Never Lie
By Steven Fullwood
It's interesting that Dwayne Wiggins, former member of Tony Toni Tone, would
begin his solo debut, "Eyes Don't Lie," aping Frank Sinatra with "Fly Me to
the Moon." If he was trying to disassociate himself from the group, Wiggins is only
partially successful.

Wiggins co-wrote and sang on many of TTT hits, and so "Eyes Never
Lie" has a familiar, yet fresh sound. His "Tony Toni Tone-ness" becomes all
the more evident when you listen to the songs "Eyes Never Lie,"
"Flower," "R & B Singer," and others. The main difference is that
Wiggins takes their sound and goes places the band never did, and probably couldn't, go.
Take the jazzy feel of "Tribeca" and the sexy "Don't Sleep."
"Let's Make a Baby" co-written by actor Jamie Foxx, features a full-blown
orchestra-and it works. "What's Really Going On (Strange Fruit)" contains
interpolations from the Billie Holiday's classic of the same name and is fraught with
images of "blood on the trees, blood on the root." The song also references
Wiggins' personal experience with police brutality. All these songs would be out of place
on a TTT album.
Other songs, "Rollin' Mountain" and "Music is Power" show Wiggins'
vocals at their strength. The album also features contributions from Carlos Santana, and
Darius Rucker from Hootie and the Blowish. Wiggins' excellent guitar skills are well
showcased on songs like "Tribeca" and "Music is Power." "Eyes
Don't Lie" is an enjoyable album, and points towards a very bright future for this
artist. M
