Russell Gunn
Ethnomusicology

By David Dodson

Warning to all jazz purists - You Might Like This! Warning to all neo-jazz fusion enthusiasts - You Might Like This! The title Ethnomusicology and the album act as a bridge between the two, sounding very traditional to one and very modern to the other. Accompanied by a group of talented musicians and turntablist DJ Apollo, Gunn tries to show the purist that there is value in the hiphop fusion that is occurring and show the "now" generation that no matter how new you get, the music still comes from the old. Gunn's one shortcoming maybe that he tries too hard. The songs are so perfectly arranged to prove a point that it takes away from the naturalness of the music. You want to tell him, "Okay, I get it now. Just play." It’s as though you’re listening to a well-structured class (Ethnomusicology 101 perhaps) and you tend to forget that it’s an album. Maybe this is what Gunn intended in which case he succeeds. Unfortunately, our best lessons in music don't take place in the classroom even when we have amazing teachers.M
