Me'Shell NdegeOcello
Bitter
By David Dodson
When Me'Shell NdegeOcello put out her first album many were fascinated by this
bald bi-sexual mother on Madonnas label who played bass. It was our fascination that
made us like her music. By her second album she gave us what the industry requires of its
bald bi-sexual mothers on Madonnas label who play bass - she put her bald bi-sexual
motherliness in our faces on Madonnas label while playing bass. We loved it; but we
loved it because we understood that those things described her and that, at the core,
she's a beautiful musician and eloquent songwriter.

Now, the bald bi-sexual mother on
Madonnas label who plays bass has put all of those things to the side and lets the
musician and songwriter get the spotlight. And like most musicians and songwriters at some
point, Me'Shell is Bitter. Oh how beautiful bitter is. This isn't necessarily a happy
album, but as Me'shell reminds us on Faithful, depressing doesnt take away from
beautiful. This isnt the same Me'Shell, this one has her own emotional struggles to
deal with and isnt afraid to share them in an honest and pure way. Although it may
be hard to find a top-40 single in that, it wont be difficult to find an
empathetic/sympathetic ear. Pushing the mood is amazing string arrangements by Steve
Barber which dont overbear, but instead accentuate the beautiful compositions
Me'Shell offers us.
