Chris Rock
Bigger & Blacker
By Sakyi Kaliym Oduro
While addressing African American home remedies and tackling important national
and sociological issues like pornography and addiction, Chris Rock is doing something very
hilarious on his latest CD Bigger and Blacker. Bigger is not for the family, sensitive or
weak hearted. However, your elders may actually like Rock, especially if they were exposed
to the humor of Flip Wilson or Red Foxx. In fact, comedy was probably raunchier in the old
days.

The supreme gut-buster of the record is
No Sex in the Champagne Room, which is a commencement address to the GED class of 1999. In
No Sex, Rock warns us to beware of guys and gals with pierced tongues - whats even
funnier Gerald Levert sings the chorus to the song. Other Bigger highlights interpolate a
Monica Lewinsky interview with excerpts of Lil Kim and feature a guest appearance by
Ice Cube who unfortunately gets pulled over on his way to his next movie shoot.
One of the most interesting things about Rock is his appeal across generations, genders
and races. Although Rock is racially controversial, his comedy is foolish yet sobering and
has something for everyone. Rock muses about harsh urban realities with the grace of
Savion Glover or Gregory Hines. Rock definitely has come a long way from Born Suspect, one
of his previous albums and starring on Saturday Night Live.
