Avant
My Thoughts
By Steven Fullwood
It would be easy to dismiss Cleveland-bred Avant as a second-rate R. Kelly, but
that would be somewhat unfair. After all, every artist has influences; it's just that some
are a little more evident that others are. In his case, glaringly so.

Be prepared to do a double take when listening to Avant's debut album My
Thoughts. This singer holds the distinction of being the first artist on Magic Johnson's
imprint, Magic Johnson Music, and is being called "the new voice of ghetto soul"
(as if we needed one.) The album's music, lyrical content, structure of the songs, his
singing - sound like pure Kelly. The album's cover sports a picture of Avant that looks
like Kelly with a fade. All this could spell trouble, at least for an artist looking to
carve out his own niche. But no matter - Avant doesn't want to impress you. He's just
interested in you jumping in the car, getting comfortable and letting the music play.

Just about all the songs on My Thoughts focus on
heartbreak, mistrust, cheating, baby-momma drama, and sex. The first single,
"Separated," covers the first three subjects, "Let's Make a Deal," is
about baby-momma drama, and "Ohh Ahh," is about, well, the name says it all.
There's a wonderful cover of Rene and Angela's "My First Love," featuring Ketara
Wyatt. It's the only song on the album that Avant's vocals shine primarily because he
momentarily sets aside all the whining, groaning and begging that made Kelly famous. Check
it out. M
