Kevin "She'kspere" Briggs - R&B's Hitmaking Bard
By Steven Fullwood
Two of the biggest hits of 1999 were written about trifling, low-down, no-good
men. Scrubs who can't pay their bills, bills, bills. What you probably don't know is that
both songs were written by a man. His name is Kevin "She'kspere" Briggs.

She'kspere's magic touch has earned him three Grammy nominations: Record of the Year
("No Scrubs"), and two nominations for Best R&B Song ("No Scrubs"
by TLC and "Bills, Bills, Bills" by Destiny's Child) and won the Grammy for No
Scrubs as Best R&B Song. Not bad for a mere 27-year old who cites Quincy Jones and
David Foster among his musical influences.
The California-native has spent a lot of time in Atlanta
lately where he's been sharing creative and financial success with LaFace Records. A few
years back, the upstart was doing remixes for LaFace artist Sam Salter, and as a result,
She'kspere subsequently developed a relationship with the record label, home to
multiplatinum artists Toni Braxton and TLC. This eventually led the songwriter to craft
the infectious "No Scrubs" for the aforementioned crazysexycool trio.
Quite simply, it was match made in heaven.
"No Scrubs" was the first single spun off their third CD Fan Mail, and it
quickly placed TLC back at the top of the charts. The single stayed number for several
weeks.

Now if that wasn't enough, She'kspere
followed that major success up with Destiny's Child's incandescent "Bills, Bills,
Bills." Lightning struck twice, and boom!, the young producer had another Number One
song on his hands.

Shek'spere is also signed with Atlanta-based Hitco Music
Publishing Company, where L. A. Reid, one half of LaFace Records, serves as president.
So far, She'kspere's roster of artists is pretty impressive. Besides TLC and Destiny's
Child, his songwriting and production skills have graced joints by Mariah Carey, Faith
Evans, Boyz II Men, Joe, Montel Jordan, Sinead O'Connor, Jermaine Dupri and Mya. M
