News & Reviews

Rob, an aspiring rapper and part time car thief, is hunted by a local thug after Rob attempts to steal the thug’s pimped out ride in Spanish Harlem. Rob’s mom ships the juvenile delinquent off to Puerto Rico to live with his thought-to-be deceased dad, Roberto (Giancarlo Esposito).

Before long, Rob is getting his groove on and making music with his stepbrother, Javi (Victor Rasuk). The sun and sand are beneficial for Rob as he gets a girl and a record deal and heads back to New York to record his debut single.

Directed by Alejandro Chomski, Feel the Noise is a barebones film that offers little in terms of original plot. Produced by Jennifer Lopez, the film features several scenes of bumping and grinding teens performing dance moves reminiscent of J. Lo’s fly girl days. Even though Feel the Noise plays as thinly-veiled platform capitalize on the popularity of Reggaeton music and to promote Sony artists in that genre, the tunes are the main highlight of the film  (R. Prioleau, MOSAEC)

Synopsis

After a run-in with local thugs, aspiring Harlem rapper Rob flees to a place and father he never knew, and finds his salvation in Reggaetón, a spicy blend of hip-hop, reggae and Latin beats. Puerto Rico, the spiritual home of Reggaetón, inspires Rob and his half-brother Javi to pursue their dream of becoming Reggaetón stars. Together with a dancer named C.C., they learn what it means to stay true to themselves and each other, while overcoming obstacles in love, greed and pride, all culminating in an explosive performance at New York’s Puerto Rican Day Parade (Studio).

Synopsis

In a raucous tale of race, family and great food, Renato, the hockey-loving, Sinatra-singing adopted son of Italian immigrants, works at Enzo’s Deli, volunteers at the local animal shelter and hangs out with his buddy, Buddy. Completely convinced he’s Italian-American like most of his friends and co-workers, Renato is more than a little skeptical when an African-American couple unexpectedly turns up to claim him as their long lost son, Leroy. Thelma and George walk a fine line between devoted and demented as they spirit him off to Baltimore, where his new found brother Dana is determined to teach him the basics of being black. Suddenly, nothing in Renato’s life will ever be the same (Studio).

News & Reviews

In Rendition, Douglas Freeman (Jake Gyllenhaal), a self-described pen pusher for the CIA, is abruptly re-tasked as a knuckle-dragger charged with overseeing the interrogation of suspected US terrorist Anwar El-Ibrahimi (Omar Metwally).

A long-time resident alien in the US and husband to a US citizen (Reese Witherspoon), Egyptian-born El-Ibrahimi is an American-schooled chemical engineer who travels abroad for business and maintains familial ties to the Mid-East. Add to those facts a few suspicious cell phone calls and sufficient evidence exists to detain and question El-Ibrahimi about a bombing in an Egyptian square.

The film takes place in the post-9-11 world where suspected US terrorists are guilty until proven innocent. And where, under the guise of national security, intelligence agencies ignore the Constitution and the Geneva Convention by backing the extraordinary rendition program through which foreign nationals are detained and interrogated in secret overseas prisons. With his latest film, director Gavin Hood (Tsotsi) not only explores this inhumane practice of information gathering; he also gives voice to those left desperately seeking the whereabouts of their loved ones. In the multi-layered film that smartly capture tales of innocents, infidels and vacillators; who is who depends on the point of view. (R. Prioleau, MOSAEC)

Synopsis

Reese Witherspoon, Jake Gyllenhaal, Meryl Streep, Peter Sarsgaard and Alan Arkin star in Rendition, a thriller from director Gavin Hood (Tsotsi). Witherspoon stars as the American wife of an Egyptian-born chemical engineer who disappears on a flight from South Africa to Washington. The woman desperately tries to track her husband down, while a CIA analyst (Gyllenhaal) at a secret detention facility outside the U.S. is forced to question his assignment as he becomes party to the man’s unorthodox interrogation (Studio).
