Nancy, a well-kept divorcee and mother of three, falls for a
mall Santa and aspiring songwriter, masquerading as an office
supply executive. Nancy's eldest, John-John, attempts to
sabotage his mom's budding relationship in the hopes of
reuniting his mom with his less than interested dad.
Despite a cast that includes
Gabrielle Union, Morris Chestnut, Queen Latifah, Terrence Howard
and Charlie Murphy, The Perfect Holiday is a imperfectly
conceived and executed film that offers little holiday cheer.

Developed with a pop audience in mind, Alvin and the Chipmunks
brings a little of the old and a lot of new flavor to the big
screen tale of singing chipmunks. But like other present
day artist, Alvin, Simon and Theodore do more than just sing.
These food hoarders rap and bust succinctly choreographed moves.
Discovered by Dave Seville, an adman by day and struggling
songwriter at night, the chipmunks go onto bling bling and super
stardom when A&R executive Ian assumes control of their careers.
Light-hearted entertainment, the film conveys expansive notions
of the meaning of family. (R. Prioleau, MOSAEC.com) |

Military research scientist,
Robert Neville has no need to worry about long checkout lines at
his neighborhood grocer. In fact, queues are distant memory for
Robert as he is the last healthy man on Earth – or at least in
New York City.
Bunkered in a posh Washington
Square Park townhouse that has a view of the memorial arch,
Robert continues his research on the plague that ravaged mankind
and broadcasts a daily message of survival across the airwaves
in the waning hope of connecting with others like him. Were it
not for his loyal German shepherd Sam, Neville would be utterly
friendless. Inseparable, Robert and his road dog roam the
streets of a decimated Manhattan by day in search of food,
survivors and the occasional test subject.
Will
Smith stars in this remake, which is an adaptation of Richard
Matheson’s novel. First filmed as The Last Man on Earth starring
Vincent Price in 1964 and then as The Omega Man starring
Charlton Heston in 1971, I Am Legend is a suspense-filled race
for the cure with Smith turning in an earnest performance as an
emotionally-teetering lone ranger. (R. Prioleau, MOSAEC.com)

In Bring It
On: In It To Win It, Southern California high-school senior
Carson arrives at the all-important “Cheer Camp Nationals”
determined to lead her squad, the West High Sharks, to victory.
But chic New Yorker Brooke and her team, the East High Jets, are
equally steadfast in their pursuit of the competition’s coveted
“Spirit Stick.” As tension mounts between the two rival squads,
Carson falls for fellow cheerleader Penn, not realizing he’s a
Jet. When Brooke discovers the budding romance, she raises the
stakes by challenging Carson to a one-on-one cheer-off. A
spectacular “cheer fighting” sequence erupts into a
no-holds-barred brawl and cheerleaders on both sides are
suspended from the competition. With their dreams of taking home
the top prize all but shattered, the leaders of both squads
realize they’ll have to take drastic measures to stay in the
game.

After 15 years of imprisonment
under false pretenses, Benjamin Barker returns to an empty nest
in London and adopts the moniker Sweeney Todd to exact revenge
on the corrupt judge that stole his life, his love and his lass.
Joining forces with the culinary-challenged, Mrs. Lovett, the
two set up shop as macabre barber and baker. With a skilled
hand, a mechanical chair and a cavernous bake house, business
booms for the deadly duo that shaves and grinds its way through
London society in the hopes of attracting Judge Turpin and his
henchman.
Tim
Burton directs Sweeney Todd with signature flamboyance and
eye-popping cinematography. The film stars Johnny Depp and
Helena Bonham Carter, respectively, as the vengeful Todd and
creepy Mrs. Lovett. Based on the Stephen Sondheim play, the
musical features delightful performances from Sacha Baron Cohen
and Ed Sanders (R. Prioleau, MOSAEC.com) |

Denzel Washington directs The
Great Debaters, a thought-provoking look at the societal benefit
of resorting to reason rather than rage. Washington also stars
in the film as Professor Melvin Tolson, a firebrand who coaches
the debate squad at Wiley College (Texas) and encourages local
farmers to unionize in his spare time.
The Wiley College varsity talk
team includes future barrister Samantha Booke (Jurnee Smollett);
the shy intellectual legacy James Farmer, Jr. (Denzel Whitaker);
and the angry, but highly-talented, Henry Lowe (Nate Parker).
The Wiley debate club takes all comers and travels throughout
the Jim Crow south from HBCU to HBCU, racking up win after win.
Refusing to be satisfied with his team’s success against
historically black colleges, Professor Tolson pushes the
envelope and begins a letter writing campaign that yields a
showdown between Wiley Wildcats and the Harvard Crimson.
Forest Whitaker, John Heard, and Kimberly Elise elevate the
narrative set in 1935, but the outstanding performance by Nate
Parker is one to watch (R. Prioleau, MOSAEC.com) |

In
Honeydripper, director John Sayles brings the blues to life in
his engaging tale of down-on-his-luck, juke joint owner Tyrone
Purvis (Danny Glover). In a last ditch effort to save his
business and redeem his soul, Purvis begs, borrows and steals in
1950s Alabama. The film features a talented ensemble, most
notably Charles Dutton whose amiable, jack-of-all-trades Maceo
meshes harmoniously with Glover's Purvis. The rhythm of the
blues permeates the film's soundtrack, reaches deep and rocks
the soul. (M. Lowe MOSAEC.com) |
