News & Reviews |
Facing a municipal plan to
bulldoze her business, a Baltimore salon owner juggles
single-parenthood and manages the drama that accompanies owning
a beauty parlor in the ‘hood.
Glaringly stereotypical portrayals throughout the film and a
too-earnest plot overshadow instances of solid work by Vivica
Fox, Kim Whitley, Dondre Whitfield, Terrence Howard and Monica
Calhoun. A dramatic comedy with stale story lines and punchlines,
The Salon is ultimately a coif flop (R. Prioleau,
MOSAEC) |
|
Synopsis |
Jenny is being forced to sell her neighborhood beauty shop to
the Department of Water and Power (DWP) due to eminent domain.
She has not told the other tenants in the salon and is trying to
build a case to save the shop. The DWP is represented by a hot
shot attorney (Darrin Dewitt Henson) who takes a liking to her
and a romance begins. This is a fresh look on the inside of a
salon where anything can happen. Enjoy this entertaining ride
for the entire family (Studio). |

News & Reviews |
Illegal Tender stars Rick Gonzalez
(Coach Carter) as Wilson De Leon, Jr., a spoiled college
suburbanite, that learns the criminal source of his family’s
fortune and reluctantly grabs a gat when his family’s future is
threatened.
Wilson’s mom Millie (Wanda De
Jesus) fled contract killers in the Bronx, NY in 1985 after the
murder of her low-level gangster hubby. And for years, Millie
has abruptly uprooted her children when her past has interrupted
their present. Her eldest, Wilson, a baby-faced man-child,
decides he has had enough of running from the mob, draws the
line in the front yard of his Connecticut home and determines to
resolve the problems that haunt his family.
Directed by Franc Reyes
(Empire), Illegal Tender is an urban gangster drama that draws
so liberally from other films in that genre that it is comical.
The film’s old school hip hop soundtrack of Def Jam hits are not
enough to enliven the stale narrative. Nevertheless, in this
trite story of a family attempting to escape its illicit past,
Wanda De Jesus is electric in her passionate portrayal of Millie
- the one momma anyone would want riding shotgun (M. Lowe,
MOSAEC) |
|
Synopsis |
After the gangsters who killed
his father come to settle a score, a teenage boy and his mother
turn the tables on the killers. (Studio). |
