The Mist, 2007, 127 minutes, Rated R
By Ramona Prioleau

Typically, a mist simply means reduced speed on the roadway, dampness and a very bad hair day. But if Stephen King imagines the day when a condensed cloud spreads across the land, that bad hair should stand straight up. MORE >>>

In a 1980’s novella, King crafted an ominous tale where fear and chaos ensues as a mysterious fog envelopes a New England town. Director Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption) adapted King’s novella into a film of the same name that stars Thomas Jane (The Punisher), Marcia Gay Harden (Mystic River) and Andre Braugher (Homicide: Life on the Street).

But forget the bugs, bats and tentacled creatures of the film. In The Mist, the real horror is Marcia, Marcia, Marcia! Marcia Gay Harden that is. Harden portrays Mrs. Carmody, an uptight small town woman thrown into a frenzy once she learns there is an undefined something lurking in the mist. Convinced that the “something” is punishment for humanity’s sinful ways, Mrs. Carmody morphs into a religious extremist who becomes a threat to any and all in her path.

While no CGI-crafted bugaboo is a match for Gay Harden’s character, the terror that grips most of the shoppers trapped in the grocery store runs a close second to the arched-eyebrow proselytizing Mrs. Carmody. Among those shoppers is a small cadre of folk that refuse to believe that the creepy mist hides things that go bump in the night. Braugher’s ultra-rational Brent Norton heads this band of disbelievers that decide to return home, leaving the remaining shoppers to continue bickering amongst themselves about the proper course of action. Although technically the lead actor, Thomas Jane is no thespian and pales in comparison to the likes of Harden and Braugher. Nevertheless, Jane’s performance is solid. M
