The Brave One, 2007, 119 minutes, Rated R
By Ramona Prioleau

In The Brave One, Jodie Foster stars as Erica Bain, a mild-mannered radio journalist that turns into a cold-blooded killer after she and her fiancé are attacked by a gang of thugs. A revenge film, The Brave One commands rapt attention when acts of stunning brutality interrupt the serenity of a lovers’ stroll. MORE >>>

A New Yorker in love with the ebb and flow of the city, Bain gleefully plods about town recording sounds that she uses for her talk radio program. Her passion for her work is surpassed by that for her man. As a couple, their future is bright. But fate intervenes and darkness pervades Bain’s world when her fiancé is abruptly taken. Reeling emotionally, Bain determines to regain control and calm her fears. To do so, Erica buys a gun. As a result, the helpless victim transforms into a pistol-packing, pint-sized vigilante.

While The Brave One includes homages to such films as Death Wish and Taxi Driver, it also has an eerie ripped from the headlines feel as elements of its narrative are reminiscent of crimes perpetrated by NYC’s Bernard Goetz. At points in this mainstream film, director Neil Jordan adds artistic touches that enrich tale. In the film, Jordan smartly captures Bain’s downward spiral with visually-distorted scenes that convey her all-consuming fear and paranoia. The director is no less creative in exploring the depth of Bain’s emotional bond with her murdered betrothed. Jordan finely incorporates romantic flashbacks in contemporary scenes in a manner that imparts the intensity of Erica’s almost unbearable loss.

While it’s easy to cheer the likes of the diminutive Foster portraying a strapped and wounded soul determined to violently take back the night, the fact is that Foster’s character is one that cowardly braves her fears by picking up a gun. Casting a criminal in a shero’s clothing doesn’t make her any more valiant. M
