Talk To Me, 2007, 118 minutes, Rated R
By Marona Lowe

In Talk to Me, a jive-talking, street savvy, man of the people overtakes Washington DC radio with a morning talk show that delivers rhythm, blues, news and views. An ex-convict, with an uncanny ability to speak his own truth and in the interim give the people what they need and want to hear, Ralph Waldo “Petey” Greene Jr. (Don Cheadle) negotiates his way to a shortened prison stint and hustles his way into a gig at WOL Radio during the 1960’s.  MORE >>>

By challenging station ownership and the sole brother in charge to program more socially relevant content, Petey Greene builds a massive following and creates a distinctive brand. Dewey Hughes (Chewitel Ejiofor) hitches his wagon to Petey’s star and pushes the disc jockey to make the most of his time in the spotlight.

A man who keeps it real, Petey’s partner in crime is an around the way girl that goes oops upside his head when necessary. Greene’s better half Vernell is portrayed by Taraji Henson who lights up the screen with her over-the-top, smart-mouthed vivacity.

The chemistry between Petey and Vernell is readily apparent. But, the fraternal bond between Petey and Hughes develops over time. The two men at first trade verbal barbs, but eventually vibe and begin a mutually beneficial partnership that makes Petey a gogo-town celebrity.

Kasi Lemmons (Eve’s Bayou) directs Talk to Me, adding humor and spice to enliven the historical look at the character driven narrative. The film also stars Cedric The Entertainer, Mike Epps, Martin Sheen and Vondie Curtis Hall. M
