Speaking of Spike

Video Feast & Fest: MOSAEC's Journey through Spike's Joints

Here's the deal. Invite a few of your cronies (or homies - whichever you prefer) to your pad for an evening or afternoon of cinematic treasures and good food. Make plans based on what your friends do best. Let the cooks cook and the video buffs bring the tapes. In any event, come together, fellowship and toast Spike's work.   When you're all done, log onto www.mosaec.com and tell MOSAEC all about it. To get you started and to  bring you a fresh perspective on Lee's body of work, MOSAEC's writers have been burning the midnight oil.  So read what MOSAEC's writers have to say about Spike's joints, then voice your opinions by posting to MO's bulletin boards.   Go 'head, enjoy the films and get your grub on!

Clockers, 1995, 128 minutes, Rated R
By Carla Robinson

The biggest problem with Clockers, Spike Lee’s tale of drug dealing woe, is its apathetic main character, Strike (Mekhi Phifer). He is no more an anti-hero than a hero, which makes him difficult to feel. And indifference is not a good audience trait. Oh, he has enough quirks and stumbling blocks, such as a Chocolate Moo jones and what seems to be an ulcer-he doesn’t have the stomach for crime, get it? But we never know that he truly wants out of his hardcore existence.  MORE>>>

Crooklyn, 1994, 114 minutes, Rated PG-13
By Lisa Patrick

This unfortunately named movie is actually a sweet charmer. With a story co-written by his sister, Joie Lee, Spike Lee’s Crooklyn is based on their early years in a large, rough-and-tumble 1970’s Brooklyn family (with parents played by Delroy Lindo and Alfre Woodard). Interestingly, Crooklyn focuses on the experiences of nine-year-old Toi, presumably Joie Lee’s alter ego.  MORE>>>

4 Little Girls, 1997, 102 minutes, NR
By Carla Robinson

Marry Spike’s prowess with weaving historical tales with his skill as a documentarian, and American filmmaking just doesn’t get any better. 4 Little Girls, his 1997 documentary on the 1963 bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama, is wondrous in its evocation of a dark time in American history, one which most would soon forget.  MORE>>>

Girl 6, 1993, 108 minutes, Rated R
By Steven Fullwood

"The only reason why I've accepted to do this is I wish to clear my name. Not that I care what people think, but enough is enough."

Two of Lee's most important films - She's Gotta Have It and Girl 6 - begin with these lines. What makes the latter film remarkable can be attributed to screenwriter Suzan-Lori Parks, and actress Theresa Randle.  MORE>>>
