Mr. Untouchable, 2007, 92 minutes, Rated R
By Marona Lowe

In Mr. Untouchable, director Marc Levin (Slam) documents how Leroy “Nicky” Barnes ran then wrecked a Harlem drug empire in the 1970s. In the Witness Protection Program since flipping on his drug dealing cohorts, the filmmakers interviewed Nicky Barnes in a secret location as a million dollar bounty still hangs over the snitch’s head. A street corner legend in his heyday and years since, Barnes was as well known for his illicit wealth as he was for flaunting his affluence. But Barnes began at the bottom. After fleeing an abusive home as a young teen, Barnes began dealing as well as using smack and ultimately wound up in prison. It is there that he networked with members of La Cosa Nostra and determined to aggressively push and not use dope. With the six other confederates of the Council, this pusher man wrested control of the Harlem drug scene and flooded its streets with heroin, ravaging the community in the process.

In the film, Machiavellian quotes, archival stock footage, audio excerpts and still photographs are interspersed throughout original interviews with Barnes, member of his drug dealing consortium, his attorney and the law enforcement officials responsible for his demise. Decades after his dastardly deeds, Barnes emerges as an embittered and vengeful septuagenarian seeking to relive his days of infamy all the while lacking true remorse about actions that ruined the lives of thousands.

Aided by a soundtrack of 1970’s songs that are thematically in synch with the narrative, Levin marshals the disparate source materials into a multi-faceted and finely crafted look at a Harlemite that became a drug kingpin and allowed his machismo to turn him into a rat. M
