Lions for Lambs, 2007, 92 minutes, Rated R
By Ramona Prioleau

In Lions for Lambs, director Robert Redford forces an examination of spin, the spinners and the spun. In the film, Senator Jasper Irving (Tom Cruise) offers journalist Janine Roth (Meryl Streep) a chance to scoop her competition by being the first to announce the details of the onset of a new military campaign aimed at revitalizing the Afghanistan war effort.  MORE >>>

But the baby-faced future of the GOP wants to ensure that Roth will favorably spin this new initiative to the American public. So, the good senator invites Roth in for a sit down. And as politico and journalist banter about battles past and present, the Beltway lambs give orders to send the lions to the slaughter.

As war rages in the Mid-East and chatter ensues in a congressional chamber, Professor Stephen Malley (Redford) and Todd Hayes (Andrew Garfield) discuss Hayes’ sudden lack of academic interest on the west coast. A Vietnam veteran, Professor Malley seeks to motivate the apathetic Hayes to commit to do more than muddle his way through school by acknowledging the student’s promise and inspiring him with a tale of two former students that were bold enough to take a stand – Ernest Rodriguez (Michael Peña) and Arian Finch (Derek Luke). Eager to get off the sidelines, Rodriguez and Finch enlisted, remaining brothers in arms on the battlefield just as they were in the classroom.

Long-winded, Lions is a thought-provoking look at media’s complicit championing of unchecked governmental aggression in the face of public apathy. It’s a film that chastises the complacent and admonishes others that feed on the heroics of the brave hearted unafraid to take a stand for their beliefs. M
