Sliced
and diced to hold the attention of Western audiences, Jet Li’s
Fearless shamefully omits
Michelle Yeoh’s appearance in Huo Yuan Jia, the overseas
extended version of the film. As re-packaged, the film provides a
cursory exposition of aspects of Huo Yuanjia’s personal journey amid
cultural upheaval. Featuring shocking scenes of both brutality and
artistry, Jet Li’s Fearless is, nevertheless, an intriguing story of
wanton hubris transformed into technical and spiritual reverence.

Motivation?
I loved making this movie because of Jet. Jet Li is the only one in
the world that can both act and perform traditional Chinese Wushu…Jet
has such good technique, but he understands the philosophy. He
totally understands that Chinese Wushu is not really about the
technique and the movement. You have to embrace the body, mind and
soul.

Fighting Competition?
Jet is known to not pull any punches. In this film, I wanted really
long takes. I wanted 10 blows rather than 2 exchanges and cut. That
means that the other party has to understand and has to practice the
same style otherwise they would never match. It’s easy to find
somebody who is good, but they look ugly. It’s a movie; you need to
have some charisma!
That’s why I decided on this Japanese actor
Shido Nakamura. Nakamura doesn’t know anything about martial arts,
but he grew up on the stage – kabuki – so he understands about
movement. We trained him for 2 months because he had this basic
knowledge about movement and understands about where the camera is.
Everyone thinks he’s a fantastic martial artist. He’s not; he’s a
good actor!

Last
Martial Arts Epic?
This movie gave me the room to talk about all my beliefs…physical,
mental…everything is here. That’s why I say this is the last Wushu
movie for me.

Art Imitating Life?
I played this role without acting. It’s really my personal beliefs.
I [combined] a lot of parts and I just used my heart.
