Dalton
Russell (Owen) and his crew stick up the Wall Street branch of
Manhattan Trust, taking over 30 bank employees and customers hostage
in the process. Once in control, the Dalton gang has stacks of cash
and hidden treasures locked in safety deposits boxes at their
disposal.
Where hostages are taken,
negotiators are called. This time around, Detective Keith Frazier
(Washington) is the public dick assigned to secure the surrender of
the criminals and the release of the captives.
But wait, there’s more to this bank
heist/hostage tale. There are dirty secrets to a rich man’s success
hidden in the bank and this rich man will do what is required to
make sure his past doesn’t come to light. Enter Madeline White
(Foster), a fixer for the rich, powerful and infamous. White’s
breezy immorality and ultra-femininity is a delightfully sinister
contrast to the table-banging, gun-toting, cigar-smoking,
boob-ogling and loud-talking gents in the film.

Although Spike Lee’s most accessible and mainstream
film to date, Lee, nevertheless, lightly peppers Inside Man with
social commentary on child-rearing and the backroom deals that
facilitate the lives of those with money and power.
