I'm Not
There,
2007, 135 minutes, Rated R
By Ramona Prioleau
As multifaceted as the icon that the
film depicts, I’m Not Here is Todd Haynes’ artistic exploration of
the ever-evolving Bob Dylan. Born Robert Allen Zimmerman in Duluth,
Minnesota, Dylan is widely regarded as a legendary musician. More
importantly, Dylan is an artist with a capital A. So much so that
Dylan risked alienating his fans in order to push himself musically
and follow his own creative path. MORE >>> |

To signify the many aspects of Dylan’s musical
and personal journey, Haynes cast six different actors to portray
Bob at various stages of the entertainer’s life. Cate Blanchett,
Christian Bale, Marcus Carl Franklin, Richard Gere, Heath Ledger and
Ben Whishaw embody the main character in six separate short films
that intertwine to create Haynes’ eclectic look at the Dylan
aesthetic.

Along with employing a shape-shifting protagonist to
craft his imaginative motion picture, the filmmaker uses distinct
cinematic techniques, drawing upon influences such as Sam Peckinpah,
Jean-Luc Godard and Federico Fellini. Overall, the film harmoniously
captures the Dylan mystique while simultaneously preserving his
enduring legacy as an artist that refuses to be relegated to a
particular genre.
Of the six Dylans, the most captivating is the
mercurial Jude portrayed magnificently by Cate Blanchett.
Blanchett’s Dylan represents the artist during his electric period.
With guitar plugged in and sufficiently amped, Jude made discordant
music – or so fans of his protest songs thought. And the media took
note, criticizing Dylan for appearing to morph into a dispassionate
pop artist. While performing in London, Jude grants an interview to
investigative reporter, Mr. Jones (Bruce Greenwood). Intent on
probing into topics that Jude prefers to avoid, the two draw
linguistic swords and trade verbal barbs in a delicious display of
vocal parrying.
