Reel Writers, Reel Films
By Delores Edwards

Now more than ever, films directed and written by African American and Latino filmmakers are hitting the big screen. But for every “Scary Movie,” “Shaft,” or “The Klumps” there are many artists of color still struggling to get their work noticed by film industry executives.

Sheryl Ellison wants to change that.

In God’s Hands or IGH Multimedia LLC is an entertainment marketing company created by Ellison. The Brooklyn-based entrepreneur began her media company as a way to help artists of color gain exposure for their film or script. After having successful careers in both engineering and banking, Ellison’s passion for the arts fueled her desire to start IGH.

Armed with a Master’s degree from Northwestern University’s Kellogg Graduate School of Management, Ellison uses her business and marketing experience to assist independent filmmakers and screenwriters market their work through the Reel Alternative Film Salon and the Reel Writers Workshop. For a nominal fee ($10), new and established filmmakers can submit their work for consideration to the monthly film salon sponsored by IGH. If selected, the film is given a date for its debut at a movie theatre in downtown Brooklyn - marquee included. By the end of its first year, IGH brought 25 film shorts and full-length features to the public.

The Reel Writers Workshop is a co-production between IGH and the Theatre of the Riverside Church in Manhattan. Here, fledging screenwriters have a chance to hear their script read aloud before a live audience. The workshop also gives the screenwriter the opportunity to receive comments, fine tune their work and network with industry executives.
