The
Honeymooners,
2005, 85 minutes, Rated PG-13
By Marona Lowe
Reprising
a role made famous by the legendary Jackie
Gleason, Cedric the Entertainer stars in the motion picture The
Honeymooners as Ralph Kramden, a working class man with a penchant for
investing in ill-fated financial ventures. When a series of half-baked
schemes depletes his family's savings, Kramden risks even more in his
attempts to salvage his marriage and raise enough money for a down
payment on a home.

Narratively, The Honeymooners motion
picture holds true to its small screen roots by focusing on Ralph's
cantankerous relationship with his pal Norton (Mike Epps) and the
Kramden's marital discord caused by Ralph's risky endeavors. While
these plotlines link the film to its successor, they also
significantly handicap the production as filmmaker John Schultz
(Like Mike), in early scenes of the movie, directs Cedric and Epps
as dull and stilted imitations of characters immortalized by Gleason
and Art Carney, respectively. MORE >>>

Once Schultz introduces John Leguizamo's socially
dysfunctional character Dodge and loosens the reins, allowing Cedric
and Epps to add their own imaginative flourish to the icons, the film
manages to depict a few distinctive comedic moments. Ultimately,
though, the motion picture dishonors the franchise on which it is
based. M
