Harsh
Times,
2006, 120 minutes, Rated R
By Marona Lowe
For
some, being all that they can be and finding a future in the Army
can also lead to success in the civilian world. For Jim Davis
(Christian Bale), success as a member of the elite Army Rangers was
a blessing and a curse. His military experience bolsters his
candidacy for a position to secure the homeland. But the lingering
impact of knocking heads at the behest of a cowboy-cum-commander in
chief also haunts his personal relationships and hampers his
professional aspirations. MORE >>>

Honorably
discharged, in limbo and back on the streets
of LA, Davis reconnects with his childhood friend Mike (Freddy
Rodriguez) and rekindles their trifling habits that result in fun,
foolishness and fireworks. A so-called buddy that violates the
tenets of friendship when it suits his needs, Davis is nevertheless
fortunate to have a homeboy and homegirl who truly care.

Ultimately an unlikable dude, Bale’s Davis is a complex study of a
wounded soldier of the apocalypse attempting to jumpstart his
civilian tour of duty.

Art Imitating Life?
I grew up in South
Central. I was the only white guy in my neighborhood. I joined the
military, got out [and] spent time on the streets. It’s the world of
people I know.
It’s a fictional story
and I just used my experiences and people I know to influence that
story. They say to write about what you know. So, it’s all a big
“What if…?” [and] taking things to their extreme.

Building Street Cred?
Some former military cadets came in to help me with the battle
stuff, train Christian [Bale] and [teach him] how to fire weapons. I
had “homey” advisors to teach Christian how to talk, how to walk.
The Spanish on the streets of L.A. is totally different than what
you’re going to hear from anywhere else. I wanted a seamless movie
so that somebody from the neighborhoods of L.A. would see this and
be like, “You got it. You nailed it.” I want the guys in county jail
to cry and say that this is art.

Harsh
Times Iraqi Connection?
I never really made that connection until people started asking
about it. Where I grew up, the people fighting in wars are the poor
kids, people from the hood - that’s who does it all. All my friends
are now going through [the war in] Iraq, and so, it just carried
down.
