Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson and Xzibit in Gridiron Gang
|

In
a dramatization of a true story, the Rock portrays Sean Porter, a
corrections officer at a juvenile facility. Frustrated by a system
that fails to rehabilitate youth offenders, Porter adopts a sports
approach in the hopes that his charges will positively channel their
aggressions.

A
film that pulls no punches in its goal to pull at the heart strings,
Gridiron Gang is nevertheless a feel good movie about urban teens
that are encouraged to redefine the meaning of turf protection.

Motivation?
One of the reasons I was moved by the material was that I had my own
Sean Porter. By the time I was 14, I was arrested six times. By the
time I was 17, it was nine. But my arresting officer basically told
me, ‘You’re going to stop f-ing up right now and you’re going to go
out and you’re going to go play football.’ So, I had that guy who
cared about me in my life.

Sports
rehabilitation program?
This program changes lives like a lot of programs implemented in
youth prisons change lives. And that’s what sports do too. As a
former athlete, I can attest to that because I know what it did for
me. It teaches hardwork and discipline and dealing with the failure
and being gracious with the successes.

Art
imitating life?
Sean is a guy who is very astute and keenly aware of what he does.
He’s not interested in the fanfare of Hollywood, but at the same
time he’s a real hero and he inspires a lot of kids. So I just
wanted to make sure that heavy responsibility was seen through.
