Glory, 1989, 122 minutes, Rated R
By Ramona L. Prioleau
There is nobility in death. At least, that's if youre a member of the
Massachusetts 54th - the first all black Union regiment commandeered by Robert Gould Shaw
(Matthew Broderick). The trials and tribulations of the 54th, which includes both escaped
slaves and northern freeman, are breathtakingly depicted in Glory. This
fact-based Civil War drama boasts a fine cast and features outstanding performances by
Morgan Freeman, Andre Braugher and Denzel Washington (in his Oscar®-winning performance
as Trip).

Wonderfully portrayed by Freeman, John
Rawlins is a former slave and gravedigger for white Union soldiers. Serving as the 54th's
leader, liaison, father figure and spiritual center, Rawlins defiantly declares to his
regiment that it's "time for us to ante up and kick in - like MEN!" And kick in
the do.
