Get
Rich or Die Tryin',
2005, 117 minutes, Rated R
By Ramona Prioleau
Inheriting a legacy of war from his
grandfather, father and uncle, Anthony Swofford (Jake Gyllenhaal)
forgoes college and enlists in the Marines. Basic training and an
over-the-top drill instructor convince Private Swofford that he may
be better off paying homage to his kin far from the frontlines. But,
that
is not to be his fate. Instead, Private Swofford is bullied into
competing for a coveted spot in the Marines Surveillance and Target
Acquisition (STA) Platoon. MORE >>>

Jarhead, directed
by Sam Mendes (Road
to Perdition), follows young Swofford through his indoctrination
as a Marine and member of an elite sniper unit in Desert Storm. As
well as capturing Swofford’s military journey, the film provides a
subtle critique of the 1990’s Iraqi conflict initiated ostensibly to
protect American economic interest in the Middle East. Or for the
naïve, simply to free the Kuwaiti people from the clutches of Saddam
Hussein’s invading forces.
For the American ground forces
charged with pounding the Iraqi army with the “righteous hammer of
God,” the conflict is about politics, killing, coping with the
aching homesickness that comes with active duty and the palpable
boredom that results from maintaining a long-term defensive position
in a desert that is miles from civilization.

Based on Anthony Swofford's memoir of the same namen, Jarhead features a talented ensemble cast
that delivers a
tale full of drama, humor and testosterone. Gyllenhaal’s Swofford is a delightful combination of innocence,
angst and bravado. Peter Sarsgaard (Kinsey)
also shines as Troy, a seemingly unflappable foot soldier with a
burning love for the Corps.
