Diary of a Mad Black Woman, 2005, 116 minutes, Rated PG-13
By Marona Lowe

After 18 years of marriage to a prominent Atlanta attorney, Helen McCarter (Kimberly Elise) is literally kicked to the curb and unceremoniously dumped by her philandering hubby (Steve Harris (The Practice).

Forced out of her home, Helen seeks shelter with her Aunt Madea (Tyler Perry), a piston-packing grandma who doesn't suffer fools. Madea refuses to allow Helen to wallow in self-pity. She encourages Helen to get a job and mandates that Helen take a pound of flesh from her no good husband and pursue her half of the marriage estate. After a Madea-influenced fit of rage, Helen starts to heal once she gets in touch with her emotions, needs and dreams for the future.   MORE >>>

Diary is a melodramatic look at love, betrayal and redemption that at times relies on base humor to produce a chuckle. Nevertheless, Diary is entertaining and features strong performances by Elise, Harris, Perry and Shemar Moore.  M
