Animal,
2005, 93 minutes, Rated R
By Ramona Prioleau
Left
fatherless as a child, James "Animal" Allen (Ving Rhames) is
reared by the code of the street and abandons his given name for a
moniker that dehumanizes. An imposing figure, Animal relies on
instincts, physicality and violence to prosper financially. It is this
philosophy of success that Animal instills in his eldest son Darius
(Terrence Howard, Hustle & Flow). MORE >>>

Animal
(Ving Rhames) tunes out Berwell (Jim Brown) in Animal
|
|
| |
A
graduate of the school of hard knocks without a strong male voice to
discount its teachings, Animal is confident that instructing Darius
in a similar fashion will arm his first born to be a man. But to
teach another to be a man, one must understand what it means to be a
man. And an animal is no man.
Imprisoned for robbery, Animal leaves
his son and his mother to fend for themselves. Considering the
cellblock and the street one and the same, Animal survives in jail
using the same methods he employed in the 'hood. But when Animal
attacks in vengeance disregarding wise counsel, he is fortuitously
ostracized from the prison crime syndicate. Berwell, a revolutionary
jailhouse philosopher intervenes and guides the unrepentant
murderous thug along a path of self-discovery and redemption.

Laced with politically-charged messages of oppression,
revolution and freedom, the film is a thought-provoking drama that
features a talented ensemble cast, including Rhames who delivers a
strong performance as the gang-banger turned solid citizen.
