And Then Came Love, 2007, 90 minutes, Not Rated
By Ramona Prioleau

Smart, successful, beautiful and a single mother by choice, Julie Davidson (Vanessa L. Williams) thinks she has it all until her precocious 6-year old son Jake declares he wants a daddy. In support, Jake’s grandma (Eartha Kitt) and his psychologist opine that the child needs a father. Jake is from one of the new generation’s fatherless happy homes that result not from death, divorce or disappearance, but from donor sperm.  MORE >>>

To Jake’s progressive journalist mom, the thought that she can’t be mom and dad to her son is disturbing. Yet when Jake starts channeling his anger negatively, Julie realizes that she must do something. Throwing morality and caution to the wind, Julie tracks down her anonymous donor in order to better understand her son’s behavioral quirks.

And Then Came Love is a contemporary tale that touches on the complexities of new age conception and child-rearing in the midst of a May/December boy meets girl comedy. At times disdainful of Julie’s procreation choice, the film nevertheless presents African-Americans in refreshing situations and roles.

The film features a delightful performance by Eartha Kitt playing Williams’ meddling, but well-intentioned mother. And Then Came Love also stars Kevin Daniels, Michael Boatman, Jeremy Gumbs and Stephen Spinella. M
