Andrea Navedo - Determined to be Seen on Screen
By Ramona Prioleau

As an olive-skinned Latina, Andrea Navedo has seen roles scripted for Hispanics awarded to White actresses. She has also noted the large number of stereotypical roles as maids, cooks and floosies that are sometimes offered to Latinas in film and television. Nevertheless, Navedo is determined to work her craft. In light of such odds she attributes her tenacity to "a good support system of family, friends and [her] husband."

Navedo's firm foundation has enabled the New York-based actress to carve out a career that includes a solid body of work. In addition to a recurring role on Law & Order as Detective Ana Cardova, Navedo also pursues film roles and she can be seen in Alfredo de Villa's Washington Heights as Maggie. "I liked that [Maggie] was a very real character and very down to earth. She's just someone living in Washington Heights. She's not a drug dealer. She's just a person with dreams and aspirations and a boyfriend she loves," Navedo explains.

If anything that is influencing Hollywood," surmises Navedo. M
