Andrea
Navedo - Determined to be Seen on Screen
By Ramona Prioleau
As
an olive-skinned Latina, Andrea Navedo has seen roles scripted for
Hispanics awarded to White actresses. She has also noted the large
number of stereotypical roles as maids, cooks and floosies that are
sometimes offered to Latinas in film and television. Nevertheless,
Navedo is determined to work her craft. In light of such odds she
attributes her tenacity to "a good support system of family,
friends and [her] husband."

Navedo's firm foundation has enabled the
New York-based actress to carve out a career that includes a solid
body of work. In addition to a recurring role on Law & Order as
Detective Ana Cardova, Navedo also pursues film roles and she can be
seen in Alfredo de Villa's Washington
Heights as Maggie. "I liked that [Maggie] was a very real
character and very down to earth. She's just someone living in
Washington Heights. She's not a drug dealer. She's just a person with
dreams and aspirations and a boyfriend she loves," Navedo
explains.

Navedo is aware that while Hollywood is
slowly diversifying the depictions of Latinos, it's up to independent
filmmakers to lead the charge "I see it [changing] a little bit,
but the only thing that's really changing is that people like Alfredo
de Villa and Manny Perez are writing and producing their own films and
making a name for themselves and giving themselves a voice. If
anything that is influencing Hollywood," surmises Navedo.
