Doing Beer As
By Kevin Shay

Warning: Miller Lite is not on the list. Nor is Coors.
I've seen unsuspecting first-time customers try to
order both of these at d.b.a., which does offer close to
a hundred bottled beers (everything from Belgian
lambics to obscure U.S. microbrews) and an
ever-rotating roster of draft beers from 14 taps (plus a
couple of old-school hand-drawn kegs), but not a
mass-produced American brew in the bunch.

Quality and selection are the name of the game, and it takes a whole wall of chalkboards to hold the intimidating list: dozens of single-malt Scotches and an equally impressive array of high-end bourbons, tequilas, vodkas, and every other brewed or fermented liquid under the sun, including a respectable wine list. But it's the beer that keeps connoisseurs coming back. Prices for everything are surprisingly reasonable ($1 off during Happy Hour), there's a back garden, and you can bring in your own take-out food. Keep an eye out for tastings and other special events.

If you're someone who tosses around terms like "bottom-fermented" and "peaty," or even if you just cringe when someone in a movie walks into a bar and simply orders "beer" or "whiskey," you'll feel right at home at d.b.a.
