Literary
Matters of the Heart
By Delores Edwards
Since the sale of The Long Walk, a short story, nearly ten years ago,
writer Donna Hill has flourished as one of the top selling African-American romance
novelists.
One of over forty-five authors for Arabesque books, the largest African-American romance
publisher in the United States, Hill, 44, has never received any formal training. In
between rides on the L or J train in New York City to her full-time job as a Public
Relations Representative for the Queens Public Library, Hill has produced 16 paperback
books, ranging from novellas to full-length romance novels. Four additional titles and her
first non-romance novel are on the horizon. Not bad, considering Hills first short
story sold for $75.00.

While top-selling romance novelists, and African-American
writers Bebe Moore Campbell and Terry McMillian have been well received in the mainstream
marketplace, Hills stories about African-American life are still relatively unknown
to the public.
That is about to change. After nearly a decade of writing love
stories, Hill stories are about to hit the big time on the small
screen. Hill’s books, “Intimate Betrayal,” “Masquerade”
and “A Private Affair,” will be adapted into three
made-for-television movies for cable’s Black Entertainment
Television’s movie arm, BET Arabesque Films. Hill’s
“Intimate Betrayal,” is scheduled to air sometime this fall.
All of the films will portray contemporary African-American
relationships ranging from drama, comedies and of course, romance.
Hill is both anxious and excited of the prospect of seeing her
characters come to life. “I just hope I will be able to
recognize my characters.” M
