And This Too Shall Pass
E. Lynn Harris

Reviewed by Steven G. Fullwood

And This Too Shall Pass doesn’t pass as quickly as this reviewer might have wished. The story takes place in Chicago and revolves around: Zurich Robinson, a rookie quarterback, Mia Miller, an ambitious sportscaster and Sean, an openly gay sportswriter whose got the hots for the muscle bound Zurich. Problems arise when Mia accuses Zurich of sexual assault and Sean ends up covering and uncovering the true story.

Zurich’s star is on the rise, and after one really crappy date with Mia, she gets upset and fabricates the sexual assault. It’s a black man’s nightmare sprung to life, because if history tells us anything, Zurich knows he will have to work hard to prove his innocence and clear his name. In response, he hires a sassy, take-no-you-know-what lawyer named Tamela to defend him. Sean is a lonely chap whose Fridays and Saturdays are filled with absolutely nothing but cable TV. Harris positions Sean on the cusp of what could be his greatest love, the man who (say it with me) he has the hots for-you guessed it, Zurich.

The insidious, steel-gray eyed, bisexual Basil (from Just As I Am) makes a cameo to entice Zurich, who seriously considers gray-eyed brother’s offer to bump uglies for a few hours in a hotel room. This invitation comes as our nerdy young journalist continues to get to know Mr. Robinson by chatting him up over dinner and sleeping over at the man’s mother’s house, in the SAME BED WITH A SCANTILY CLAD ZURICH no less. So you know Sean is in a tizzy about Basil’s advances towards his man.

The only thing driving And This Too Shall Pass is whether or not Sean ends up with Zurich and lives happily ever after. It’s a small twist on the meek shall inherit the Earth theme, with Sean playing meek and Zurich the Earth. Never mind Mia; she’s just a device to get Sean in the picture. Forget Basil; he’s there as a sexy devil sitting on Zurich’s shoulder, whispering lusty temptations. Actually forget everybody else (Tamela, Mama Cece, etal.) because the main story here is that nerdy guys like Sean do get hot sexy guys like Zurich sometimes, but only if they are good and go to church.
