Wonderfully written article. Very candid, honest and balanced. The article, comments of Bubba and Wayne, captured the truth (and fiction) of what really happened in comparision to the movie without being overly critical or resentful. Good job!! I will put a link to this article on tcwilliams.com.

I totally agree with Wayne & Brad in what they said about the whole atmosphere in Alexandria and in the schools at this time. I transfered from a Maryland high school in November to George Washington, which was my 10th grade year(1971). I then went to TC in 72 and was on the football team for the 72-73 and 73-74 seasons. I am also very familiar with Coach Boone, Hines, Shaw and found them to be very helpful in alot of aspects in most of the players lives, but also to be very assertive and put great pressure on us to be the very best players we could be and at times considererd harsh, but with that said, I find alot of their attitudes to have been right in line with the morals and parental attitudes of the time. I greatly appreciate their influence in my life and being on that team in that city were a great experience. I wish I could of stayed in the area and continued their influence on my life.

Lisa, thanks for a great article, and for giving my husband the opportunity to tell his story. Every player has a story to tell, and you will probably get a different story from each of them. As the movie states "History is Written by the Winners", and I know that my husband was one of those winners. Although the movie didn't depict 100% of that History, the truth remains the same, it took 75 ball players to win. I'm glad the story was told, and I'm glad the hype is over, but one thing for sure, "I will always remember" my Titan, Brad "Bubba" Smith, and the contributions he made to during the 4 years he played for the the Titans of T.C. Williams. Thank you again for allowing him to tell his story.

Although I don't remember the school closing for fights - this is one of the best articles relating the movie to the real world. Thanks

The comments are very true. So many events and nicknames were different. Brad Smith, Frankie Glascoe and Wayne Sanders should step forward. My hat goes off to these guys.

Remember, Greg Willis, aka Block, Class of 1970

Follow your heart, you won't go wrong!

I was delighted to read Lisa R. Foeman's interview with Brad "Bubba" Smith and Wayne Sanders, Two Titans Remember.

The movie is excellent, I had goosebumps watching it. It was so uplifting that I brought along my 14 year old son. Before the film he told me he really didn't llike football. After the film he wanted to see it again!

Thanks Mosaec for finding Mr. Smith and Mr. Sanders and letting them have their say. The pictures they provided for the story are priceless!!!

Congratulations on a job well done!

Very incisive!. Outside of historical documemtation, on Alexandria in 1971, your actual real life involvement with the team, school gives the most honest account of that era. Some people have tried to make people believe that there was no racial tension at T.C. Williams. I not only know that that is far from the truth, but, I sense that these are people that don't want people to know that the movie is pretty accurate in a lot of ways! I sense that these are people who don't want to deal with the truth. Thank you for your veracity. All of you guys are inspirations. What a story!!! What a movie!!!

I just wanted to thank Lisa R. Foeman for this wonderful article and for interviewing 2 of the actual players in the "Titans" team.

It's nice to know that although Hollywood tends to exaggerate actual facts or distort them, this movie (by the comments of the players) seems to have achieved the companionship and love spirit that actually took place at that epoque.

Thanks again.

While I realize that a movie can't tell the entire story, I would like to know know more about Frankie Glascoe. How can a tailback that was such a great player be omitted from the entire story! The clips of him depicted on the ABC documentary were incredible. I would like to know more about him!

Thanks for the additional information and clarifying concerning the situation in VA at the time. As you state the big picture is what was so important and was portrayed so strickingly. It was interesting to know some of the other friendships and the "eating at each other's homes". Reading of the true personalities of the coaches was so satisfying - personally it appears to me that Denzel Washington would have been fatherly and scary as mentioned and Coach Yoast certainly came across as mild but don't mess with him! Thanks!
