Gritty. realistic. The author tells it as he knows it. Shocking- the use of such strong language, especially when it comes from the mouth of a young boy of six or seven. This is the tale of someone who thinks it is fun to steal, play truant and fight. Personally, I found it a rather long read- it took me 2 days to work my way through all 415 pages.... but it was worth the experience. Read "Colored People" by Gates first though.

Simply and honestly written. I wouldn't catagorize this it as one of those Black-poor-youth-makes-it-out-the-ghetto books. It's way too deep for that. It is however a must read, a classic. I wish somebody would have recommended it to me when I was a teenager.

Inspirational and motivating. An incredable reading about one man's life; we all can relate to at least some of his feelings of fear, anger and finally, sucess. It shows that anyone can make it in life, one just has to try and believe.

Claude brown offers a honest glimpse into what life was like for african americans living in New York in the 50's. The author relates experiences that seem fictious but is able to educate his reader on the true history of this time period.

Great Book!! An extreme eye-opener for any race. Living in any situation. You would never think or would like to think about a child at the age of six-seven years old would have to grow up in the situations that Mr. Brown (RIP) and his young friends lived in. Brings you back to a harsh reality of unleveled playing fields for young poor African Americans then and now. Great book for everyone, especially youth workers in low-income areas.

This book is... so many things. It is more than a window to view what urban life was like for the young black youth in the 40's and 50's. I am a young female adult who grew up in the suburbs, yet I too have been through so much and have seen so much. And I relate to the immense fear and confusion of what it is and what it takes to grow up and take hold of your life. For me, this book is a timeless legacy depicting the insanity it is to just survive. I wish I could thank Claude Brown.

One of the most important memoirs of the 20th century, not ot mention a must read for every American, black and white. I discovered it in 5th grade while attending an all white catholic school outside Washington, DC. I just found a copy and gave it a re-read (15 yrs. later) and it was as powerful as I remember.

Claude Brown's description of life for most young deliquents in the 1950's projected a most accurate account in Harlem's lower-class area. It depicted how dysfuctional families maintain its homeostatis and how multigenerational transmission operates in the family. This book is an excellent source of information for those who are pursuing a career in counseling, child development, substance abuse and psychology. Thanks..P.S. Tooo much profanity.

I was assigned to read this book as a junior in high school. Then I thought my teacher was punishing me. As I got into the book, I didnt want to stop reading it. It is all that and then some-inspiring, deep, thought provoking...just an all around good book. Today I am a high school principal and former English teacher, and I have just found a student to read it. He reminds me so much of me-interested in Black literature. I think this book is the perfect introduction and "hook" for him.

I read this book three times when I was a teenager. That was 30 years ago. I haven't read it since, but he has walked with me throughout my life. I would like to thank Claude for being my inspiration. He was the only one who could reach me through his story. He taught me that with enough belief and determination, you can rise above and overcome anything. And I did. The book was about a ghetto boy growing up in Harlem in the 50’s, and it reached a farm girl in upstate NY in the 70’s. I was able to overcome the horrors of child abuse and drug addiction. I didn't just merely survive, I overcame, and Claude Brown was my inspiration.

I love it!!! I will always remember that book. I t was one of the first books that I ever sat down to read that wasn't on my teachers reading list. That was back in 89. I'm now 31 years old with 6 girls. I'm putting it on their reading list.

I discovered this book on my bookshelf nearly six months ago. This book has been sitting there for over ten years and I have to admit that I am mad at myself for not reading it sooner. Claude Brown is truly an inspiration and a living symbol for overcoming life's obstacles. His story is very encouraging and gives a lesson for success.

i had been given a book report assignment for a sociology course with a list of book titles, Manchild in the Promisedland, being on the top of the list. It was the first book I was able to find. This book really surprised me revealing what life was like for a black person during the 1940s and 1950s. Brutally honest. If the dates and years hadn't been mention in the book, one would have thought that these events might had taken place back in the 1970s or 1980s. This book made sense, showing that even in the days when are grandparents were growing up, life was still hard and dangerous. So much for that old saying, 'back in the good ol' days.'

I took a black literature class in high school because I loved to read, and that is where I first read "Manchild in the promised land." I still read this book every year or so, and it's been 25 years since I first read it, I think it is one of most powerful, interesting books I have ever read, and I believe it is as every bit as good as "To kill a Mockingbird." I have often wondered what happened to his brother, Pimp, and if he ever saw Sugar again, it's a book that you grow with, and every young person black or white should read it, I am so grateful that I did.

I feel this book should be required reading in all schools, I went to a all white school, but took a Black Literature reading course because I thought it would be easy to just read, as it turned out, I read Manchild in the Promised Land, and I think this was the greatest book ever, next to "To Kill a Mockingbird." Claude Brown was one of the finest authors ever, no one could ever draw a picture of the poverty, and what heroin did to a whole community, how fascinating to see what a drug did and the few survivors that were left after it came through and did it's destruction. It shows how a young man was able to see through the hypocricy and see that the streets only held death and destruction, and to see that at age 21 and grow from it, well, it's just not done, he was a old man internally by the time he was 25, no doubt. May all young Claude Brown's read this book and take something with them, from it, and they too can grow.

I read this book over thirty years ago as a young teen. It was my favorite book because it opened a world to me that I had not known. I still remember the characters: Sonny Boy and his little brother pimp. I don't know why I found the subject matter so intriquing. It was just the best book I'd ever read.

I am on page 310 of this book and so far it's is the most graphic and most interesting novel I've ever read on the subject. Even the Auto Biography of Malcom X could not portray so graphically and vividly the rough life of growing up in Harlem back in the 40's and 50's. I applaude CLaude Brown for his strength and Honesty, His Courage and sincerity, but most of all his gift of sharing it all with us. A defininte requirement in all High School and College curriculums!

Inner city youth don't really understand the negative effects of their environment. When they do understand these effects they tend to blame the environment. Low social economic , drugs , abuse can stunt educational and personal development ,but Claude Browne shows that with perseverance and faith anything can be achieved. Im a product of my environment . I lived in the ghetto , through poverty and drugs and i managed to graduate with a Master's Degree. Many kids today have a low threshold of success and think that the ghetto is all that they will ever know. Claude Browne shows us that there is a way out and that success can be achieved. peace

I was suprised at how intriguing and absorbing this book was. It was probably one of the grittiest and realest things I've ever read, especially for a school report. I enjoyed it , but I would only recommend it for Mature audiences because of the language and content.

The language is nothing new, you will learn and use it one day or Another out on the street, or at home, school work... knowing that sombody lived a life like that and then became somthin great to this worl..is very magnicifant...i loved it..r.I.p Claude Brown

I purchased this book from the Hue-Man bookstore in Harlem, USA in the summer of 2003. Finally, in August 2004 I have picked it up to read it and I'm so glad that I did. In the beginning, I laughed and giggled so much. Then toward the middle and through the end I became more and more nervous about what the next page would bring. I'm enjoying it tremendously (now on page 399) and I don't want it to end. Obvioulsy, I won't be able to know what his later years became but I sure wish he'd done a sequel to Manchild in the PROMISED LAND. Excellent reading. A truly poignant story. RIP Mr. Brown.

as me being a 13 year old girl i think that the book was powerful and since this was an autobiography i think that Mr. Claude had live in "hard knock life" with the drugs and prostitution. and i think that no child should live in that type of community because that harms the child mind and soul. but the book was exellent!!!!!! i will give Mr. Claude five stars!!!*****ohhh yeah the cusin was raw!!!!

I read this book in junior high school. I attended the inner city schools in New York City Harldm, the Bronx). The author told of his struggles as a child; but became educated. It defies the argument that all "kids" from the inner city are thugs, and nothing good can become of them. Not true! This should be a "must read" in all schools; inner city as well as schools in the suburbs!

Fantastic! I first read this book in 1973 while in 9th grade. It's 2005 and I just completed reading it again for the umpteenth time. The writing is so vivid and real that each time I read it I feel as if I'm right there in the neighborhood. Hat's off to Claude Brown!!!!

This book is the street guide survival handbook to ghetto or in Claude's case, Harlem. I enjoyed reading this and was able to relate to many of the ideas and experiences of Claude's upbringing. Although I wasn't born during those times, I relayed his time to mine and found the similarities even within the life of my younger brother. This may be one of the first true ghetto stories ever written and is a must have in my library.
